Recycling & Waste Management

The UK generates over 435 million tonnes of waste a year. It is the responsibility of the waste management industry to dispose of waste safely, with due consideration for the environment and conforming to government regulations.

Waste management departments have to meet targets for waste reduction and recycling, in particular the EU Landfill Directive which requires a reduction of at least 3.5 million tonnes of biodegradable waste sent to landfill by 2010 and a further 3.7 million tonnes by 2013.

Local councils, public sector bodies and private waste management companies have increased employment levels for a range of roles in this sector.
